Check this web site for LA times images of the Memorial Day parade. There is a lot of pencil work and scraping in these images and one or two heavily worked over by staff artists. Manipulation has been a big part part of photography for a long time.

Good photos.... illustrates, as you say, that manipulation has been with us as long as photography has been around. I also enjoyed the photos on the same site of the hotel in Mexicali for deported migrants.
