I think this may wind up printed and hand tinted.
You might consider dodging the necks a little bit for a tad more contrast. Almost lost in the black. Although tinting should provide a good cure.
Total agreement on the dodging. The image needs work as a B&W prior to tinting.
What I like about this photo is that the two birds look like a positive and negative with the one in back "un-dodged.
